Looking back at the 2025 Science Festival: photonics and AI in action in Metz
Photonics, AI and scientific discovery: more than 500 students on the Metz campus for the 2025 Science Festival
The Metz campus of CentraleSupélec opened its doors on October 6 and 7 on the occasion of the 2025 Science FestivalNearly 500 middle and high school students from Metz, Behren-Lès-Forbach, Thionville, Phalsbourg and Sarreguemines, accompanied by their teachers, discovered the daily life of the school's teacher-researchers, researchers and technicians.
The event was organized with the participation of laboratories such asPhotonics Institute, LMOPS et Loria.
The students explored various scientific themes through interactive workshops:
- Explaining the AI revolution: Immersion in the world of algorithms with billions of parameters. Participants understood how data, thanks to the power of today's graphics cards, powers facial recognition, autonomous driving, and personalized recommendations.
- How to make an invisible screen: exploring light and its properties using polarizers. Students manipulated an old LCD screen to observe the movement of light and discover the technology behind our modern screens.
- Light and sound: optical workshops to visualize the operation of a laser and complex installations, to understand how light propagates in an optical fiber to produce... music!
- "La Fabrique": A visit to the campus fablab to discover the prototypes developed to support research. Students were able to observe various prototypes developed on-site with the help of 3D printers, 3D scanners, and other laser cutters available!
- “Spectroscopy” platform in action: exploring Raman spectroscopy and its applications. Students saw how this technique can be used to rapidly analyze molecules and verify product quality in industry, from the laboratory to production lines.
The 2025 Science Festival allowed students to discover research in a different way, through concrete, interactive, and accessible experiences. See you at the next edition!
