The 2022 edition of the Shanghai thematic rankings has just been published. With 85 French institutions ranked in 47 of the 54 subject areas, this result illustrates the ability of French institutions to differentiate themselves through scientific specializations. This year, France holds a total of 664 positions, or 3.5% of the total number of hits in these rankings.

Featuring in Mathematics

Mathematics is the discipline in which France stands out the most. 36 French institutions are ranked in this discipline, representing 7.2% of the total number of institutions in the rankings. Our country occupies two of the three places on the podium: 1st and 3rd place respectively for the Université Paris-Saclay and Sorbonne Université.

Leaders and newcomers

  • 43 ranked institutions appear in at least one of the Top 100 themes, compared to 40 in 2021, across 165 positions in 36 disciplines. Among the most represented are the University of Paris-Saclay (ranked in 27 disciplines), Sorbonne University (16 disciplines), the University of Grenoble Alpes (15 disciplines), Paris Sciences et Lettres (15 disciplines) and the University of Montpellier (11 disciplines).
     
  • 19 French institutions also appear in the Top 50 themes of this ranking: Université Paris Saclay (ranked in 10 different disciplines), Sorbonne Université (9 disciplines), as well as Paris Sciences et Lettres, Université Grenoble Alpes and Université de Montpellier, each ranked 6 times in the Top 50.
     
  • 7 French institutions have made it into the rankings, including Oceanography (University of Caen), Medical Technologies (Universities of Caen and Reims Champagne Ardenne), Veterinary Sciences (ENVT and Oniris), Mechanical Engineering (Cnam) and Mathematics (Universities of Picardie Jules Verne and Littoral-Côte-d'Opale).
