Committed actor in transitions for a sustainable future

In the face of ecological and societal challenges, CentraleSupélec is fully committed to a sustainable future. This commitment is part of the School's 2022–2032 strategy and is reflected in a climate roadmap, a Sustainable Development and Social Responsibility (SD&SR) master plan, a Sustainable Development and Social Responsibility (SD&SR) Charter, and the active involvement of the entire community.

A strategy supported by the entire community

CentraleSupélec is actively engaged in environmental, societal, and digital transitions. This dynamic is consistent with the MESR's Climate-Biodiversity and Ecological Transition Plan and relies on several levers:

  • its 2022–2032 strategy,
  • its climate roadmap,
  • its master plan for sustainable development and social responsibility (SD&SR),
  • its DD&RS Charter,
  • and the mobilization of all its stakeholders.

This mobilization is led by a steering committee (COPIL DD&RSE), chaired by the general management, and supported by a network of correspondents in the laboratories and departments.

A structuring DD&RS master plan

Deployed since 2021, the DD&RS Master Plan organizes the School's actions around six priority areas:

  • strategy and governance,
  • training,
  • research,
  • social policy,
  • student life,
  • environmental management of campuses.

It structures the implementation of commitments in all dimensions of the institution.

The DD&RS Charter: a compass for action

Adopted in 2022 after participatory development that began in 2020, the Charter for Sustainable Development and Social Responsibility CentraleSupélec's (DD&RS) formalizes a collective ambition. It involves all of the school's stakeholders: staff, management, unions, students, etc.

It is based on six main axes:

  • Strategy and governance : imbue all the School's activities with a sustainable and responsible approach,
  • Training : prepare engineers capable of acting ethically in the face of the world's major challenges,
  • Research and innovation : accelerate innovation in the societal field to invent new sustainable models,
  • Social policy and territorial anchoring : promote equity, diversity, inclusiveness and attractiveness of science,
  • Environmental management : going beyond the regulatory framework to reduce the campus footprint and preserve biodiversity,
  • Responsible partnerships : collaborate with committed stakeholders, notably via the Climate Labels Guide, which allows students to evaluate companies' CSR commitments.

This charter complements that of the University of Paris-Saclay, adopted in 2021, which lays the legal foundations of the SD&CSR policy at the university level.

A climate roadmap to steer the transition

Adopted in 2023, the Climate roadmap reflects CentraleSupélec's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint, as part of the Paris Agreements.
It is based on concrete and measurable actions, such as:

  • the regular production of GHG assessments, a first greenhouse gas emissions balance sheet (GES) was carried out in 2020, then every two years (2022 and 2024),
  • the development of mobility plans promoting sustainable travel,
  • a responsible purchasing policy,
  • waste management,
  • improving the energy efficiency of buildings.

Training in transition

CentraleSupélec is developing its training courses to fully integrate environmental, societal and digital issues.
The goal is to train conscious and responsible engineers, capable of acting in a world in transition.
Among the measures implemented:

  • un “TransitionS” course offered from the 1er year of the general engineering cycle from September 2025,
  • opportunities, specific modules in climate sciences, biological diversity, circular economy, energy and ecological transition, etc.
  • teaching units transdisciplinary co-constructed with the University of Paris-Saclay,
  • an annual Forum of Responsible Engineers: the FIR,
  • awareness-raising actions throughout the training.

In 2025, the school also launched a Climate Label Guide, designed to support students in analyzing company commitments. This guide was co-constructed with a group of student volunteers and their Transition delegates.

Committed research for a lasting impact

The CentraleSupélec laboratories are mobilized to integrate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) defined by the UN in their projects. All laboratories were invited to self-position themselves with regard to the SDGs in order to identify their contribution to the transitions.

Each laboratory has designated a SD&CSR correspondent, who works to:

  • include scientific projects in a transition process,
  • promote interdisciplinary approaches,
  • encourage collaborations around climate, biodiversity or energy transition issues.

A fully involved student community

Student engagement is a key pillar of the school's transition process.

Several levers are mobilized:

  • opportunities, Transition delegates, elected in each promotion,
  • student associations involved, including the GRITEC club or IMPACT,
  • concrete initiatives: awareness campaigns, responsible projects, partnerships with civil society actors, etc.

DD&RS Label

A commitment recognized by the DD&RS label

In December 2022, CentraleSupélec obtained the Sustainable Development & Social Responsibility Label (DD&RS) for a period of four years. This label, supported by the ministry, the CPU and the CGE, recognizes the quality, structure and relevance of the approach taken by the establishment.
